2020 NFL Draft: Jets trade back, get Baylor WR Denzel Mims 59th ...

Joe Douglas you beautiful soul. This is what competency feels like? To be fair the bar is real low. But in his first off season Joe Douglas seems to have a clue. This never seemed to be a requirement for past regimes. I’m not sure if y’all remember the mock draft I mocked up for my beloved Jets. But click here for a refresher:

Round 1, No. 11 overall: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville

Grade: B+

Analysis - I would’ve loved to have my guy Jerry Jeudy. BUT Joe Douglas stuck to his plan and drafted an offensive line to protect our QB. Some say Becton wasn’t the best left on the board but to me he has the biggest upside. Already a great run blocker his Impact will be felt immediately. Does he need to polish his pass protection? Absolutely but you can’t teach light feet and size. Solid pick

Round 2, No. 59 overall: Denzel Mims WR, Baylor

Grade: A

Analysis - The Jets traded down here. I admit I yelled at my tv once I saw this. The chance to get a playmaker was there and we moved down for what ? Well this is why they pay Joe D the big bucks . He acquired an extra pick and still Got a playmaker at 59. Denzel Mims is a sub 4.4 big body receiver who goes up to make plays.

Mims has the potential to make his slide to 59th overall seem silly in short order starting as early as whenever players put on pads and helmets this year. With a ridiculous catch radius, he should also develop into a red zone threat quickly into his career as the safety valve for Sam Darnold. Becoming a precise route runner and lowering the amount of concentration drops are on the docket for most important parts of his future development, but all reports out of the Baylor camp shines the light on him as a hard worker who loves the craft of being a receiver.

Round 3, No. 68 overall: Ashtyn Davis S, California

Grade: B

Analysis - I knew we needed safety depth but I thought we would get that later. Ashtyn plays like his hair is on fire and has corner experience. I’m thinking a Big Nicks package with him. Marcus maye is also always hurt.  But this is a Gregg Williams pick all the way, versatility and speed.

Round 3, No. 79 overall: Jabari Zuniga, DE, Florida

Grade: B-

Analysis- B- and not a B because I thought there were better players on the board. This pick gives jets fans nightmares due to our last pass rusher from Florida. Jabari has great speed and strength. He just needs to put it together.

Round 4, No. 120 overall: La’Mical Perine RB, Florida

Grade: B

Analysis - Another Gator. We needed a number 2 Running Back and we got one. A Bruiser and change of pace back with good hands. Can’t complain here

Round 4, No. 125 overall: James Morgan, QB, FIU

Grade: C-

Analysis - I get we needed a back up Quarterback but in this round there was value elsewhere. Would’ve like to see more O line or weapons. Kid can throw though and is tall and white. So QB profile all the way.

Round 4, No. 129 overall: Cameron Clark , OT, Charlotte

Grade: B

Analysis - Good Reach here. Kid is a bully, probably will move in at guard. This pick is a project but I think it’s going to pay off.

Round 5, No. 158 overall:Bryce Hall, CB, Virginia

Grade A-

Analysis - Was very high on him during the process. A second round player in the 5th round. Steal ! Injury concerns are there but this kid is big corner who makes plays on the ball in the air. If healthy this is the STEAL of the draft.

Round 6, No. 191 overall: Braden Mann, P, Texas A&M

Grade:- IDK it’s a punter

Analysis - Big Leg. That’s good

We traded our last pick for Quincy Wilson a corner who shown flashes before in the league. Probably much better than any corner we might’ve taken here.

Overall Draft Grade: B+

Joe Douglas came out and stuck to his plan. I respect that. Between these players and the UDFA signings I think we have some depth and talent to look at.
